Wood product scope is broad
Wood coverage spans many Chapter 44 headings and specified downstream products. Some furniture, pulp, paper and other products can be relevant depending on the exact Annex I code.
Material composition matters
Do not assume every woody-looking product is covered in the same way. Material and species definitions can affect the result, including products involving bamboo, rattan or other excluded materials.
What importers should collect
- Exact product and CN classification.
- Species / material information where relevant.
- Forest or production-plot geolocation.
- Supplier and producer chain information.
- Evidence of legal harvest / production.
- Deforestation-free and forest-degradation evidence as applicable.
Wood-specific workflow risk
Complex transformed products may involve multiple wood inputs and suppliers. Product-level traceability should be designed before shipment rather than reconstructed only after an EU customer requests evidence.
For manufacturers: if a finished item contains wood from multiple upstream sources, keep the material, supplier and origin evidence separable enough to support the operator's due diligence.
